Not sure the company who made the 3-D projection, but saw this on December 17, 2011 at 7:30 pm on the Maritime Hotel's west side facade. The Maritime Hotel is a 12 story building located in the Chelsea district of Manhattan, New York City at 363 West 16th Street at Ninth Avenue. HD version here.

Bicycling with my Small Dog and How I did It

One question I get asked semi frequently is "I want to take my little dog with me in a bicycle mounted basket. Do you have any suggestions?" This is a great question, and, in my opinion, falls into a somewhat grey area. A great deal depends on the dog and owner. If you want to give it a shot, maybe this post will help. In the provided example, I'll go over the equipment and method I use to get my pup riding with me.

Very, very, very small baby steps is how I got my dog to ride in a bag on my bicycle! My current setup for this is a Surly Cross Check, a Tubus Logo Rack, and a Deuter Rack Pack Grocery Pannier. I have also used a Jandd Grocery Bag Pannier with equal success.

Getting the doggy to ride in the bag :

With the bicycle bag upright and open on the floor, I gently placed my dog into the bag. If my dog showed a little resistance, I still gently try to put him in, but if he totally freaks out, I start again in another half hour or so. Once successfully in the bag, I give him much praise and some doggy treats. I let him stay in there for 20 seconds or so and then lift him out. This little exercise is repeated a few times throughout the day. Discourage your dog from jumping out the best you can.

Step two involved step one, but lengthening the amount of time spent in the bag gradually to a few minutes. Whee! Someone stop this crazy roller coaster!

Now the next phase is movement. With dog in bag, I slowly picked the bag up a few feet off the ground for a few seconds, and then placed the bag back to the ground. Repeat. I pour the treats and praise on pretty thick. After that, I started to carry my dog around in the bag : walking around the house, up and down stairs, walking faster, stopping and randomly turning, etc. After this seems successful, I repeat the process outside.

Now we introduce the bike into the mix. Exciting! Parking my bike upright with all the necessary accessories installed, I repeated most of the previous steps. I let Flux (my dog) sit in the bag attached to the bike for a few seconds, then work up to a few minutes. The next step involved walking the bike around a bit inside my home. Then walking the bike outside (I went to a fenced in in area, e.g. backyard, school field, dog park). Mix it up: walk with the bike, run with the bike, etc. Hopefully this graduates to taking bike rides anywhere from a few miles to 50 miles! The trick, I believe, is to slowly work you and your furry companion up to riding together. Patience. All people and all dogs are different. Good luck!

Summary / Pointers :

Slowly and patience are the keyword here. Do not aggressively force anything.
Copious amounts of praise, treats, and rewards.
Give doggy an ample bathroom break before you ride out! The one and only time my dog jumped out, was because he had to poop. Totally understandable.
Make the first rides very short and try to end with something awesome for your doggy. Ride to a dog park or somewhere he can play, etc. The first ride should not be to the vet for tetanus shots.
Have the dog's leash and collar on. Some people secure the leash to bottom of the bag for additional security.

IKEA Hack : Bicycle Storage Rack

Presenting the 3 tier stacked IKEA storage bicycle rack! All rack components are from the modular (and very inexpensive) Stolmen series from IKEA. Using this post for inspiration, I used two telescoping posts, two clothes rails, ten end fixtures, and six hooks. This, in my mind, made the system more secure and stable for three bikes. All tools for assembly are included with components. In a nutshell, use the Ikea instructions for assembly. Padded strips with adhesive backing placed on the inside of the Stolmen hooks will prevent scratching.

Like : No drilling is required! All components are matte white, which will probably look good against any interior. This being a modular system, you can add or subtract other add-ons from the same model family. Put some plants on it, or a mirror, maybe a cat bed? And lastly, 3 stacked bikes! Who has that? Watch friends marvel at your mad hacking engineering skills. Cost : $100 - $120ish.
No Like : Yea, getting that top bike kinda sucks. I stand on a chair to grab the highest bike and put said bike back. Obviously, having the lightest bike on the top helps.
